The Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate a case of police officers shooting and killing a man on Saturday night.
The incident took place on Saturday, March 12, 2011 when a police cruiser pulled a car over on Walker’s Line in Burlington at about 7:30 p.m. The officer was stopping the car after reports were given that the car was swerving on the road and the driving was driving ‘erratically.’ An officer patrolling the area then saw the car driving in the wrong direction on Walker’s Line.
The officer approached the car and had a short interaction with the 34-year-old male driver. During the course of this interaction, the man and the officer began to yell and grab at each other, according to eyewitness, Mark Zubchinsky. After some time, the office was forced to take out his firearm. According to Zubchinsky, the officer took a few steps back away from the man and told him that he “needed to calm down.” The driver unfortunately, ignored the officer’s warnings and continued to yell and grab at the officer. The officer then discharged his firearm, shooting the man at close range. The man was immediately taken to Burlington Hospital, but died shortly after at about 10:00 p.m. due to the gunshot wound.
The man’s name is currently not being released but there is a full investigation ongoing. Conducting the investigation is the Special Investigations Unit, which includes eight investigators and three forensic investigators. The authorities are hoping to get to the bottom of what exactly happened very soon. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Special Investigations Unit at 416-622-1935.
